Grant first became active in creative arts while in elementary school, studying cello for a short time before taking up guitar and eventually finding his voice on electric bass.  While touring and working as a recording artist during the early 90’s through 2006 as a member of the critically acclaimed art rock group, Pleasure Club, Curry began painting/drawing in 1997 as an additional form of artistic expression and would later transition into music production in 2005 as his touring schedule began to taper. The next several years were spent in his recording studio, in Ponchatoula, La., assisting developing artists in realizing their musical vision.  Continuing to develop his personal musical vision, an interest in working beyond the boundaries of traditional song structure led Curry to work with like-minded collaborators making “spontaneous records.”  That is, make recordings quickly and without preconceived ideas.  Begin with a singular melodic phrase or rhythm and let this act as guide to the next, if any, musical gesture.

The music composition process mentioned above gradually became what is Curry’s current process in creating visual art;  a process not dissimilar to the gestural or action painting beginning in the 1940’s through the 1960’s.  Another certain reference point is Zen Painting and the influence of Asian calligraphy.  Figurative abstractions are commonly seen in his work. While there are numerous themes, personal to the artist, repeated throughout his collection of work, it is Curry’s hope that the viewer may find his painting/drawing resonating in a personal way that transcends the artist’s experience.

A brief description of Curry’s musical and visual aesthetic is best expressed as a combination of ostinato and minimalism.  The obstinate repetition of forms and phrases and the stubborn simplicity of elements act as anchors for the listener/viewer to engage with.

After 30 years in the New Orleans, La. area, Grant now resides in Decatur, Ga with his wife, Cynthia, and stepson, Gibson and works out of Madison Studio B.
